Itsy Bitsy Spider:
A Fun Action Song
For Around The Campfire

Itsy Bitsy Spider is a perfect campfire song for the whole family. It has a familiar tune, easy words, and fun actions.

Singing around the campfire is the perfect way to end a day at camp.

The littlest children will enjoy joining in if you include some preschool songs for them.

If you went to preschool in North America, you probably sang this song when you were a child.

The words

The eensy weensy spider went up the water spout
Down came the rain and washed the spider out
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain
So the eensy weensy spider went up the spout again

The actions

The itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout

  • Touch your left thumb to your right index finger.
  • Touch your right thumb to your left index finger.
  • Repeat while raising your arms to make the spider "climb the spout".

Down came the rain...

  • Wiggle your fingers and lower your hands.

...and washed the spider out

  • Spread your hands flat and draw them to the sides.

Out came the sun and dried up all the rain

  • Make a circle with your arms.

So the eensy weensy spider went up the spout again

  • Do the thumb/index finger thing again.

Was that confusing? That's OK - there is no wrong way to do this! Make up your own actions - or get your preschooler to teach you!

Itsy or Eensy?

My family says "Eensy Weensy Spider" because that's how I learned it when I was a child. Besides "Itsy Bitsy", there are even more variations:

  • Incy Wincy
  • Ispy Wispy
  • Ipsy Dipsy

Sing whichever works for you - or make up your own!

Trivia

This song has been around since at least 1911.

A Danish pop group called Joyspeed turned the song into a reggae-inspired techno song. It was actually on the charts briefly back in 1995!
