Camping Sites In France

France has a huge network of over 11,000 campsites. It's the largest camping country in Europe! So the problem is deciding where to go!

The campsites range from small, natural areas with basic amenities to larger, star-rated sites with extensive amenities. There are also opportunities to go "wild camping" in certain areas - you need to check out the regulations for the particular area you are looking at.

Types of Camping Sites in France

  • Star-Rated Campsites: One to five star rated based on amenities, pitch size, number of bathroom facilities etc.
  • Municipal Campsites: Often located in or near small towns or quaint villages with basic facilities - you'll get clean bathrooms and hot showers. They are managed by the local mayor.
  • Farm Campsites: Some farmers run small campsites, with just a few pitches and basic amenities.
  • Aires Naturelles: Larger, natural area campsites with up to 25 spaces often on the motorways, offering essential facilities like washrooms.
  • Wild Camping: "Camping sauvage" or wild camping is allowed in some areas. It's important to check the regulations in the area you are travelling in. Sometimes you may need to pack up before sunrise. Wild camping is not allowed in campsites in and around Paris.
  • Glamping: A choice of glamping sites with furnished luxury tents, yurts, tree-houses and other unusual types of accommodation.

French Campsite Star Ratings

One Star Campsites

These tend to be small with basic facilities. You will get basic washing and toilet facilities but maybe not a hot shower! They are very cheap though, some just a few euros a night.

Two Star Campsites

These will have a reception, toilets, showers, hot water, slightly larger pitches and some have electrical power sockets.

Three Star Campsites

These have same facilities as one and two star, but extras like a much larger pitch, a shop, playground, internet and maybe a swimming pool.

Four Star and Five Star Campsites

These are the top end campsites! You can expect more luxurious facilities, eg. private washing cubicles, guaranteed hot water, pot washing areas, communal cooking area. A swimming pool, internet access and an eatery are compulsory on these campsites. The price will of course reflect this.

Planning

Research different campsite types and amenities to find the best fit for your needs.

Booking

Booking is recommended, especially in popular areas and in the busy summer weeks (July and August). However many campsites, particularly municipal ones, allow walk-in reservations.

There is a European Camping Card ACSI that can give you cheaper access to many camping sites in France.
