France has a huge network of over 11,000 campsites. It's the largest camping country in Europe! So the problem is deciding where to go!
The campsites range from small, natural areas with basic amenities to larger, star-rated sites with extensive amenities. There are also opportunities to go "wild camping" in certain areas - you need to check out the regulations for the particular area you are looking at.

These tend to be small with basic facilities. You will get basic washing and toilet facilities but maybe not a hot shower! They are very cheap though, some just a few euros a night.
These will have a reception, toilets, showers, hot water, slightly larger pitches and some have electrical power sockets.
These have same facilities as one and two star, but extras like a much larger pitch, a shop, playground, internet and maybe a swimming pool.
These are the top end campsites! You can expect more luxurious facilities, eg. private washing cubicles, guaranteed hot water, pot washing areas, communal cooking area. A swimming pool, internet access and an eatery are compulsory on these campsites. The price will of course reflect this.

Booking is recommended, especially in popular areas and in the busy summer weeks (July and August). However many campsites, particularly municipal ones, allow walk-in reservations.
